I use Facebook to keep up with friends. I send messages to my mother, laugh at my childhood best friend's latest joke, and catch up on all those hotties on my high school football team who never knew I existed. But here lately I have wandered around and explored Facebook a little, and I wound up smack dab in the middle of the dark side. When I say dark side I mean the places where people like this and this lurk within the fog.
Honestly, there are no words to describe what I saw. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to truly put into words the horror that hides behind those blue and white Facebook walls. The only words that come to mind at all are 'just wow'. *sigh*
There are a few groups on Facebook that peaked my attention. Actually, there were a lot, but I'll start with these few, and save the "I hate greedy baby mamas, Ex-wives, and sorry ass women living on child support" for another day. People are mishing and moshing back and forth about whether or not drug tests should be mandatory for welfare recipients. One of these pages even goes as far as putting an African American woman with her two children as the default profile pic. I'm pretty sure my jaw hit the floor at that point. I honestly couldn't believe my eyes as I read the cruel and ignorant comments left by the group members. What the fuck are they thinking? Surely the majority of Americans can't believe this way. I sure the hell don't think drug tests should be mandatory for welfare/food stamps. Why? Because, if someone fails a drug test does that mean that them or their family shouldn't be able to eat?
Really, people you are only hurting the kids. Yes, so maybe daddy spends his time on the corner smoking rock, but there are still babies at home that need to be fed. There are still basic essentials that this family needs. I mean it's not like welfare checks are even enough to live on, and they barely cover the basic essentials for most families.
I know that part of the argument is that the people on drugs will use their welfare and food stamps to buy dope. In some cases I'm sure this happens, but I don't think it's a reason to make everyone of them suffer. Honestly, being from a little shithole town in the middle of nowhere where prescription drug addiction effects over 50% of the population, I've met people in this situation. I've known people throughout my life that were addicted to prescription drugs, and some of these people did receive government assistance. Did they sell their food stamps to buy dope? No. They made sure their families were fed, and after that I'm not sure, but I do know that they fed their babies. As for the welfare checks, I'm not really sure what happens with those, but I don't believe that just because some people spend theirs on dope that all recipients should have to suffer.
Here is just a glimpse at the crazy that is happening over on Facebook. It would be impossible for me to post it all.
If you didn't notice, Ms. Daisy Harris came along to try to clear up the situation, but unfortunately she sounded quite a bit more ignorant that the people bashing welfare recipients. I can't help but laugh, because she obviously believes everyone should learn more about drugs, and that's not a subject I'm interested in researching. Sure, I've done my far share, but who hasn't tried a thing or two in their younger days? If you say you haven't then you are a very rare minority. But, that's a post for another day.
People bitch about their taxes going to pay for welfare, and then they say they want all recipients drug tested. I'm sure the have no clue how much that would cost the government. And where would the government get that money? *ding ding ding* You're right! Your taxes!
Honestly, I really don't know what to say. The hate these people are spewing is making my head hurt. What are your views on this topic?
